The dream started as a little girl when I locked the bathroom door and spent hours combining things I found in the medicine cabinet such as toothpaste, hand lotion, perfume, and liquid soap. My parents would knock on the door and ask me what I was doing and I would answer, “just making some beauty potion.” When they asked me what profession I wanted to have when I grew up I responded, “An actress, writer, teacher, mommy, and person who mixes stuff together. What would you call that?” (They thought maybe a pharmacist but as it turns out I wasn't too interested in all the intense schooling required.)

My very health-conscious husband noticed I was using beauty products with multiple parabens in it, which are basically chemical preservatives that have been found in high concentrations in breast cancer tumors. Parabens are also linked to skin irritation for those who are sensitive or allergic to them.

He proceeded to tell me that the petrolatum in my lip balm basically causes sun damage due to photosensitivity as well as interfering with the body’s own natural moisturizing mechanism leading to dry skin and chapping. In a nut shell, my problems were being made worse by using cheap, inferior lip balm to alleviate the very conditions that it is supposed to take care of.

Making the switch to organic, paraben-free products was not an easy task. In the first place, it was very hard to locate such products and when I finally found them, they were ridiculously over-priced or contained potentially harmful chemicals despite being labeled all-natural. Since I am a diehard do-it-yourselfer from quilting to scrapbooking to crocheting, my husband recommended I make my own stuff. So I did! I enjoyed it more than words are able to express and it reminded me of my dream when I was a little girl to make “beauty potions.” Thus, Eskimo Kissez was born.
